Call 844-335-0814 and our service desk will connect you with an independent local electrician who wires hot tubs and spas.

Before your hot tub is delivered

  • Check the spa manual for voltage, amperage and breaker size
  • Confirm your panel has space and capacity for a new 240 volt circuit
  • Pick a location with a level base and space for the disconnect
  • Plan the wiring route from the panel to the tub
  • Book the electrician before delivery so the tub can be filled and used right away

Plug in spas that run on a standard outlet still need GFCI protection and a suitable outdoor outlet.

The spa disconnect and GFCI protection

The disconnect gives you a way to shut off power at the tub for service, and the GFCI inside it protects people from shock if current leaks into the water. The disconnect has to be placed a safe distance from the tub but still within sight of it. The circuit is usually run in conduit or underground to the disconnect, then to the spa's control box.

If the panel is full, a panel upgrade or a load management option may be needed first.

Wiring a hot tub step by step

  1. Call 844-335-0814 and tell us the spa model and where it will sit.
  2. We connect you with an independent electrician who wires hot tubs.
  3. The electrician checks panel capacity and plans the circuit route.
  4. The permit is pulled and the circuit, disconnect and GFCI are installed.
  5. After inspection, the spa is connected and tested before filling.

Moving or replacing an existing spa

A replacement spa may need a different circuit size than the old one, so do not assume the existing wiring will fit. Older installations sometimes lack GFCI protection or have a disconnect in the wrong place, which is worth correcting at the same time.

Keep the area around the disconnect clear so it can be reached quickly.

Questions about Hot Tub Electrical Wiring

Does a hot tub need its own circuit?

Most hardwired hot tubs need a dedicated 240 volt circuit. Check the manual for the exact requirement.

Can the hot tub share a circuit with the pool equipment?

Generally no. Spas are usually wired on their own circuit, sized to the manufacturer's specifications.
