Electrical permits are issued by the city you live in, or by the county if your address is unincorporated. Sacramento County's Community Development Department provides development services to the unincorporated areas of the county, while services within cities are handled by each city's own departments.
That is why the same panel upgrade can follow a slightly different permit process in Elk Grove, Carmichael or Davis. The electrician you are connected with should know which office applies to your address and handle the permit.
Many callers are SMUD customers. SMUD's service territory covers Sacramento County and small slices of Placer and Yolo counties. If you are outside that territory, your bill shows which utility serves you, and it is the one to contact about outages, meters and service connections.
For SMUD customers, SMUD installs the meter and energizes service only after the local agency has approved the inspection, so permits and inspections are part of the schedule for any service upgrade.
Across the region, common calls include electrical panel upgrades, EV charger installation, emergency electrical repairs and whole house rewiring in older homes. See every service on our services page.
